As a temporary measure, Immigration Service Delivery have updated the Notice to Employers.
What Does the Interim Notice Mean for Workers?
If your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card has expired and you are waiting for your renewal to be processed, you are still permitted to remain in Ireland and continue working on your existing conditions up to 31 August 2026 provided all of the following apply.
This applies to all expired IRP cards regardless of the number of weeks that have elapsed since the expiry of the card, as long as an active application for renewal remains.
What Proof Do You Need?
When you submit your renewal application online, you receive:
- A receipt of application showing the date of application and a unique OREG number
- An application completed email once your application has been approved
Both of these can be used as proof of your renewal application when speaking to your employer or immigration authorities.
Important – This Does NOT Apply If:
Your permission expired before you submitted your renewal application. In that case, this interim notice does not apply to you and you should contact ISD immediately.
If an employer dismisses an employee based on an expired IRP card during this grace period, the employer may be found liable for substantial compensation claims under the Unfair Dismissals Act. MRCI’s previous notice still applies in this case, which can be found here.
Full details of the interim notice published by ISD can be found here.
