The Department of Justice is fast-tracking legislation that would make Irish citizenship significantly harder to obtain for thousands of migrants workers. No evidence has been provided to justify these changes. No problems have been identified with Ireland’s current citizenship process and the Government’s claims that they bring us in line with European norms are not supported by the facts.
Keep Citizenship Fair
Scrap the Changes!
What are we calling for
-
- Maintain the 5-year residency requirement. It is fair, reasonable and in line with many countries across Europe.
- No salary threshold for citizenship. Migrant workers in essential roles are net contributors to Irish society and deserve equal access.
- No bar on accessing social supports. Workers who needed support due to illness, exploitation or workplace injury should not be penalised.
- No language test. Workers have communicated successfully in Irish workplaces for years, there is no evidence this is needed.
- Scrap all proposed changes. Taken together, they create a system that makes it harder for migrants to ever call Ireland home
