Travelling with Minor Children

By 30 October 2025No Comments

If you are travelling to Ireland with children under 18, or if a child is travelling alone, please read the following guidance.

Child Safeguarding

The Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration is committed to child protection. Immigration officers are alert to any concerns about a child’s welfare, including possible trafficking or exploitation. Where concerns arise, the child may be referred to Tusla, the statutory child protection agency.

General Guidance

You are not required by law to carry supporting documents, but doing so can help immigration officers verify family relationships and process your entry quickly.

Please note that airlines and carriers may have their own requirements for minors.

If a Child is Travelling Alone

It is recommended that the child carry:

  • A signed consent letter from their parent(s)/guardian(s) with contact details
  • A copy of the parent/guardian’s ID (passport or driving licence)
  • Proof of relationship, e.g. birth or adoption certificate
  • Address and contact details of where they will stay in Ireland

If Travelling with a Child Who Is Not Yours or Has a Different Surname

Bring documents to show:

  • Your relationship to the child (birth/adoption/guardianship papers)
  • A letter of consent from the other parent/guardian, with contact details
  • A copy of the parent/guardian’s ID
  • Groups (e.g. School or Youth Trips)

Group leaders should present:

  • A list of all group members
  • For each child: a letter of consent, proof of relationship, and a copy of parent/guardian ID

Each child must carry their own passport or ID.
