Change to Citizenship Rules for Individuals with International Protection

Department of Justice Announcement:
Effective Monday, 8 December 2025, individuals granted international protection will be required to have five years of reckonable residence in Ireland before applying for Irish citizenship.

  • Applications received before 8 December 2025 will continue to be assessed under the previous three-year residence rule.
  • Applications submitted on or after 8 December 2025 must meet the new five-year residence requirement.

This change takes effect from 8 December 2025.
