What You Should Know About Passenger Name Record (PNR) Data in Ireland

By 30 October 2025No Comments

What is Passenger Name Record (PNR) Data and Why It’s Collected

When you book a flight, airlines collect details like your name, contact information, travel dates, and booking details. This information is called Passenger Name Record (PNR) data.

In Ireland, the Irish Passenger Information Unit (IPIU) gathers and processes this data to help prevent and investigate terrorism and serious crime.

The law that allows this is S.I. No. 177 of 2018, based on an EU Directive (2016/681).

Your PNR data may be shared with authorised Irish and EU authorities when needed. It is kept for five years, but your personal details (like your name) are masked after six months to protect your privacy.

If you want to see what data is held about you, you can email the IPIU at IPIUdataprotection@ipiu.gov.ie.
