Groups call for hope for undocumented and young asylum seekers & refugees.
MRCI Director Edel McGinley said, "We congratulate Frances Fitzgerald on her appointment as Minister for Justice and Equality. In her previous role she was a strong and progressive voice for all children in Ireland. As Minister for Justice, she now has the opportunity to fight for the rights of children in direct provision and undocumented children."
IRC CEO Sue Conlan stated, “In the spirit of justice and equality, we must live up to our international commitment to treat refugees with dignity and respect and end the terrible system of Direct Provision; and we must bring undocumented people back into the system, so they can stop living in the shadows. These are pragmatic, compassionate and cost-effective ways to say, once and for all, that Ireland cares about justice, about equality, and about people."
Both groups are calling on Minister Fitzgerald to take four key steps to protect Ireland’s most vulnerable:
- An end to the Direct Provision system
- The introduction of a Single Procedure to streamline the protection system for people seeking refuge
- Regularisation for undocumented people in Ireland
- Comprehensive immigration reform with the long-awaited IRP Bill
