mPower Youth Project

mPower is a migrant youth empowerment project initiated by MRCI. It brings together young people to share their stories and experiences of making Ireland their home, through film.

The film explores contemporary themes such as identity, problems in accessing citizenship and residency, experiences of racism, difficulties accessing third level education and hopes, dreams and aspirations for their future in Ireland. What all of these dynamic and inspiring young people share in common is that, while they were all born outside Ireland, they have all made Ireland their home.

The young people became involved in the project after an initial outreach phase, following which a core group of young people came together and started to share their stories and identify key themes emerging in their experiences of living in Ireland today. The footage for the film was captured in a film school weekend facilitated by Richie Keane and film maker Katie Gillium in the Base youth centre Ballyfermot. This weekend saw participants developing film making skills, forming connections and friendships and ultimately participating in a very creative and facilitative process of storytelling.

The process and work accumulated in the film ‘Making Ireland Home' launched Thursday evening the 10th of November in the Film Base, Temple bar by Mary Cunningham director of the National Youth Council of Ireland.
