Redundancy procedures for Green Card / Work Permit holders

The Employment Permit Section will look favourably on Work Permit applications from persons who have been made redundant (lost their job) within the last three months and who hold a valid employment permit. The labour market test (FÁS/EURES & newspaper advertisement) is not required, the ineligible job categories do not apply, there are no salary restrictions and applications will be prioritised.

The following information must be provided:

  • A cover letter indicating that this application is for a person who has been made redundant by a previous employer
  • Fully completed new application form with all relevant documents and fee of €1,000
  • Copy of employee’s passport showing immigration stamp and up to-date GNIB Card
  • Letter from previous employer stating that employee has been made redundant within the last three months and an explanation why, enclosing a copy of the existing permit
  • Copy of the P45 from previous employer – this must be dated within the last three months
  • The original copy of the existing Employment Permit
  • Employee immigration stamp must be in date when application is made

If an employee makes a Work Permit application and the three-month period since redundancy has expired, the Employment Permit Section will look on applications on a case-by-case basis and on their individual merits. It is useful to explain in your cover letter the reasons for the delay in making an application. If you have been in Ireland for a significant period of time, it would be useful to demonstrate this with supporting documentation, as this would be of relevance to your case.
