Policy with respect to Romanian / Bulgarian nationals

Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union on 1st January 2007. Nationals of these countries can therefore travel to Ireland without the need for a visa, and are not required to register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB). However Romanian and Bulgarian nationals arriving in Ireland for the first time require a Work Permit to work in the State, similar to the procedure described in the Work Permits section of this website. When a Bulgarian or Romanian national has worked in Ireland for one year on a Work Permit, they will no longer need a permit. Please note that Romanians and Bulgarians are not eligible for a Green Card permit.

If a Romanian or Bulgarian national has been working in Ireland on a Work Permit for at least one year before these countries joined the European Union on the 01/01/07, that person no longer needs a Work Permit to work in Ireland. This right of access to the labour market without the need for a Work Permit extends to family members also.

This restriction on the right to work does not apply to people who are self-employed.
